"MOTHER AND CHILD" - 1936, Peter Macchiarini
Mahogany wood.
Carved during the Spanish Civil War, Peter Macchiarini considered this piece his "Guernica" (after the 1937 painting by Pablo Picasso). It depicts a naked child protecting her mother, and was inspired by a Look Magazine photo of peasant women being "rounded up", and later shot, by Franco's fascist troops.

Both a commentary on the devastation of WW2 and a warning about the Atomic bomb, which Peter sensed was coming.
